The Library of the Future

What does the sustainable library of the future look like? Visitors to Biblio Con 2026 could write down their answers at the boot of the Netzwerk Grüne Bibliothek [Network of Green Libraries| and I incorporated them into the drawing as a large-scale vision of the future.

There were many great ideas that highlighted the potential of libraries to foster solidarity, sustainability, and community. The library as a place for education and social interaction, as a cultural institution, but also as a space that is warm in winter and cool in summer. A place offering water and shade, barrier-free access—not just to the building itself—as well as common areas and programs for all ages. A place that visitors can help shape and define. Where books and other items can be borrowed and exchanged. Where dialogue, advice, and democracy are fostered, and where living spaces are shared with plants, animals, and the environment.

A picture of the process. The small cards show the ideas I gradually incorporated into the image.

This is what it looked like at the end of the day. I was so happy with so many great, sustainable ideas, inspiring conversations, and enthusiastic visitors.

Here are a few more close-ups of the image, featuring facade and rooftop greenery, community gardens, a clothing swap, accessibility features, nesting aids for birds and insects, a mobile library (via bicycle and bus), opportunities for exchange and advice, and a repair and reading café—to name just a few. There is also a library cat and a dragon!
