A Window Artwork For Biodiversity

At the Free University of Berlin, I created another window mural. This time for the campus library, featuring around 42 animals and plants that live on campus. The new artwork ties in with the window mural at Mensa II, like a green ribbon that runs through the campus, setting a precedent for species diversity and biodiversity. Its narrow lines also serve as a decorative bird barrier and enhance the learning atmosphere for library visitors.

The coyote (Canis latransis the library's mascot. Here a brimstone butterfly (Gonepteryx rhamni) has landed on its ear.

The plant and animal species depicted in the artwork are target species that have been sighted on campus. Making them visible here draws attention to the fact that the campus is also their habitat.

Sand lizard (Lacerta agilis)
Black coal-burning sand bee (Andrena pilipes)
European praying mantis (Mantis religiosa)
Large Cabbage White Butterfly (Pieris brassicae) and grass frog (Rana temporaria)

Soil cross-section with trouser bee (Dasypoda altercator) and grub (melolontha melolontha)
Blue-green darner (Aeshna cyanea)
Brown-breasted hedgehog in hedgehog tunnel (Erinaceus europaeus)
Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis)
Field mouse (Microtus arvalis)
Peacock butterfly (Aglais io) and half-moon hoverfly (Scaeva pyrastri)
Wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi)
Green woodpecker (Picus viridis) and squirrelSciurus)

Even from the inside, the window artwork is a real eye-catcher, especially when the afternoon sun streams in. While sitting at the work tables, you no longer see just the brown facade opposite, but a colorful wild meadow in which your eyes can get lost for a moment while your brain takes a break.

The finished work seen from the terrace, where you can take a break from studying and learn a little about biodiversity on campus.
